Via lpt drucken "lähmt" System

Hallo Liste.
Wenn ich via lpt drucke, dann steht mein System für so lange still
(es werden keine Eingaben/Ausgaben mehr angenommen/ausgegeben
 (Mauszeiger, Musik etc.)), bis die Daten an den Drucker übertragen worden
sind.(lpt im interrupt-driven mode)
Ändere ich die Parallelport-Option auf polled bzw. extended, steht es zwar
nicht mehr still, ist aber seeehr langsam (sehr zähe Mausbewegung, stockende,
langsame Musikwiedergabe, wie bei CDRoms ohne DMA)

Hat einer eine Idee woran das liegen könnte? (und vor allem, wie man das
ändern könnte ;o)
