Vim auf deutsch

Hallo liebe Leute,

ich habe eine Frage zur Konfiguration von vim unter FreeBSD. Ich hätte
gerne deutsch als Sprache für den vim. Das Manual von vim sagt dazu
folgendes:

When you start Vim, it checks the environment to find out what language
you are using. Mostly this should work fine, and you get the messages
in your language (if they are available). To see what the current
language is, use this command: >

        :language

Ich erhalte als Antwort: de_DE.ISO8859-15. Das sollte also stimmen.
Leider sind die Ausgaben immer noch englisch. Ich habe noch versucht,
die Variable in der login.conf auf de_DE.ISO_8859-15 zu setzen (es gibt
ja einen Symlink zur vorher genannten locale). Auch das hat nichts
geholfen. Kann mir jemand einen Tip geben?
