Das sollte man mit file(1) herausfinden können. Bei mir funktionert
es mit folgendem Bitmap einwandfrei:

desk2:~ » file /boot/splash.bmp
/boot/splash.bmp: PC bitmap data, Windows 3.x format, 640 x 480 x 8
