Some systems, such as SunOS 4.x, need NIS to be running in order for their
hostname resolution functions (gethostbyname(), gethostbyaddr(), etc.) to
work properly. On these systems, ypserv(8) performs DNS lookups when
asked to return information about a host that does not exist in its
hosts.byname or hosts.byaddr maps. FreeBSD's resolver uses DNS by default
(it can be made to use NIS, if desired), therefore its NIS server does not
do DNS lookups by default.

Nutzen denn Deine FreeBSD-Clients NIS fuer DNS-Abfragen? Macht der
Sun-NIS-Server das ueberhaupt (wenn ich mich recht entsinne, unter Solaris
nicht mit der Defaultkonfiguration, Angabe aber ohne Gewaehr)

Vielleicht etwa andersrum, Du hast DNS-Probleme und bekommst keine
Antworten vom NIS-Server, weil DNS den NIS-Server nicht aufloest?

Nur so als Gedanke.. Zu testen, in dem Du statt des Servernamens seine
IP-Adresse in die NIS-Konfig des Clients eintraegst.
