Bist Du sicher, daß Du das original MAKEDEV verwendest?
Hier funktioniert es einwandfrei.

Du kannst das Device notfalls auch manuell anlegen:
# cd /dev
# mknod ata c 159 0 root:operator

Aber Du solltest wirklich mal schauen, was mit Deinem
MAKEDEV los ist. Normalerweise muß das gehen.

Vielleicht ist da beim Update etwas schiefgegangen.
Hast Du mergemaster verwendet?
