arplookup - was heisst das?

da ist ein Rechner in nem andern Subnet und ich habe nun ständig diese
arplookups im syslog...

aus dem man werde ich aber nicht schlau...

was heisst das denn jetzt genau? MAC-Adresse irgendwas soundso!?
