Klingt nicht nach FreeBSD.

Das ist der Normalfall, sofern Du am Bootloader-Countdown
nicht abbrichst und es einen Kernel mit Namen "/kernel"
gibt (und man nicht manuell an den Bootloader-Skripten
herumgepfuscht hat).
