Es ist ein Xorg-Fehler. Standard-Workaround:

    Option "XAANoOffscreenPixmaps" "on"

Für meine ATI Radeon X300SE radeon(4x)-Karte habe ich stattdessen
auf EXA umgestellt, was hier die Probleme ebenfalls behebt.
