Wie schon erwähnt, im Single-user-mode läuft kein getty.
Da läuft nur init(8) und eine Shell, sonst nichts.

Theoretisch könnte man init(8) so hacken, daß es auch beim
Booten in den Single-user-mode versucht, ein getty auf
ttyd0 zu starten. Das ist allerdings nicht ganz trivial,
denn dann muß alles, was benötigt wird, im root-Dateisystem
vorhanden sein, einschließlich login(1).

Und das hilft Dir immer noch nichts, wenn das System am
Boot-loader-Prompt steht.
