also am besten haben mir bis jetzt diese zwei varianten gefallen:

echo | tr '\n' '\0'

head -c 1 < /dev/zero

wobei das zweite scheinbar nicht SUSv3 kompatibel ist (und
schaetzungsweise auch nicht POSIX, nur hab ich da keine specs [hat
jemand nen link? :)])
