Hunderte von apache childs

Hallo liste

Seit heute Nachmittag spinnt mein Apache 1.3.22 auf FreeBSD 4.4 völlig.
Er startet hunderte von child process bis die Netzwerkverbindung zu ist.
Unterdessen habe ich 1.3.23 installiert aber es ist immer noch das Gleiche.
Das Problem kam einfach plötzlich zu dieser Zeit war ich nicht mal mit dem
System verbunden.
Hat jemand eine Idee wo das Problem liegen könnte?
