Bei dem Problem kann ich leider nicht helfen (ich kann's
mit meinem SCSI-CD-ROM-Laufwerk [allerdings nicht Toshiba]

Das ist der Default bei GENERIC und somit auch beim Kernel
auf der Installations-CD-ROM bzw. -Floppy. Daran liegt's
also leider nicht.
