There was an error starting the GNOME settings Daemon

Hi,

ich hab ein (partielles) portupgrade gemacht und das
hat ua Gnome neu installiert. Nach dem Portupgrade
startet gnome unter root ganz normal. Ein user
kann Gnome nicht richtig starten. Die panels und einige
environment Variablen werden nicht gesetzt. Es
erscheint ein Fenster mit

There was an error starting the GNOME Settings Daemon.
Some things, such as themes, sounds, or background settings may not
work correctly.
The Settings Daemon restarted too many times.
The last error message was:
Child process did not give an error message, unknown failure occurred
GNOME will still try to restart the Settings Daemon next time you log in.

Jegliche weitere Fehlermeldungen fehlen. Permission probleme
möchte ich nicht gänzlich ausschließen, da es an diesen
auch für root nach dem Update zunächst scheiterte Gnome
regulär zu starten, aber ich habe schon einiges probiert.
Google bringt auch nix.
Wie komme ich denn nun weiter?
