XFree86-4.0.1 und deutsche Umlaute

Hallo,

ich habe hier ein FreeBSD-4.1-RELEASE und mit diesem
das XFre86-4.0.1 als Port kompiliert.
Leider gehen die Umlaute nicht, bzw. sie werden nicht
angezeigt. Wenn ich in xev kucke, "sehe" ich sie aber
schon, d.h. es heisst dann irgendwie "displayed
character 'ä' " oder so.
@ und | und so gehen seltsamerweise, d.h. sind an der
richtigen Stelle.

/etc/X11/XF86Config:
