Gute Frage. Der Loader startet den Kram auch ohne brand:

    marc(at)oranje$ brandelf as
    File 'as' has no branding.
    marc(at)oranje$ file ./as
    ./as: ELF 32-bit LSB executable, Intel 80386, version 1, dynamically linked, stripped

Speedup? Relikt?
